Providing Safe Access and Improving Pedestrians Environment in MIDC Marol, Mumbai

WRI India Sustainable Cities

This proposal aims to revitalize the image of MIDC Marol by enhancing the quality of pedestrian environments and providing safe access to Chakala metro station. The transition from industrial to business district, close proximity to the international airport, upcoming VAG corridor and affordable real estate prices compared to Central Business Districts in MCGM area, positions MIDC Marol as a desirable location for businesses.
However its infrastructure and image still corresponds to that of an industrial area. MIDC Marol lacks the image of a business district quality transport infrastructure for its employees and an attractive public realm. While large “hard infrastructure projects” like the metro are being built to improve mobility; “soft infrastructure projects” – such as comfortable and convenient pedestrian access have not received attention.
A detailed documentation of MIDC Marol was undertaken by EMBARQ India in 2011, along with a broad study of the land and building uses around it. The physical, economic, institutional and socio-cultural networks were documented through mapping, surveys, interviews, counts and field visits.
