Better e-Bus Challenge | Fostering Innovative solutions for improved e-bus systems

With almost three-fourths of all public transport trips being made on buses, carrying more than 70 million passengers daily,  200,000 more buses will be needed by 2031 to meet India's growing public transportation demands.The Better e-Bus Challenge is an initiative by WRI India, supported by the Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI) E-bus mission, that focuses on innovative solutions to improve the quality and operations of public electric bus (e-bus) systems in Indian cities.The objective of the Better e-Bus Challenge is to infuse technology-based solutions to improve planning and scheduling, operations, and management of e-buses. The Challenge also aims to bring innovative modes of procurement and financing of e-buses across the country, tailored for Indian scenarios.

About Better e-Bus 2022 - India's First Accelerator for e-Buses

The Format of the Challenge - 

  • Evaluation - All applications will be evaluated by a team of experts in urban mobility, mobility businesses, e-mobility operations and management, marketing and branding.
  • Mentorship - Selected entries will undertake the Better e-Bus Bootcamp where the proposed solutions will be developed further with key stakeholders from partnering transit agencies. Innovators will be mentored by mobility, investment, and business experts.
  • Jury Day - The Bootcamp will culminate in a Jury Day where the most promising team/s will be provided implementation support of up to $50,000 for demonstrating their solutions in selected cities.
  • Demonstration - WRI India will work with the winning solutions and champions, within the transit agencies, to facilitate demonstrations and monitor performance throughout the 9-month long demonstration project.

What the winners will get -

  • Tailored Mentorship with WRI India’s domain experts and a global network of mentors for business development and strategy, business plan reviews, and legal compliance
  • Implementation support of up to $50,000
  • Pilot Support for design and implementation, team building and other technical support
  • Exposure to, and engagement with, government agencies and officials at the national, state and city-level as well as exposure to potential investors
